AJ Adkinson & Son has its roots in the heart of Oadby, starting life, like many independent funeral directors, alongside a building and carpentry business and working from a specially constructed Chapel of Rest, which still exists alongside our premises on London Road. As Fred Adkinson contemplated retirement without a successor, he naturally looked for a funeral director who shared his passion for quality, service and dedication to his local community. The obvious choice was Fraser Gilbert, of EC Gilbert Ltd, independent family funeral directors of Great Glen. The two companies already worked with and supported one another and their shared ethos made for a smooth transition. In tribute to the Adkinson family legacy, the company name was kept. Fraser’s dedication to high standards and impeccable service ensured a growing stream of families seeking care and with his family’s support, he purchased and set about converting the abandoned Oadby Cinema. Once completed, this beautifully appointed Funeral home ensured that AJ Adkinson & Son’s comprehensive service was extended and available to families under one roof. Oadby residents will recall the original buildings in the photographs below.
